Recent Graduate Job Search Tips

Although the job market for graduates is better than a year ago, it is still important for recent graduates to have a well-defined job search strategy.

 Personal Brand.

Before launching a job search, a recent graduate should take time to evaluate themselves.  They should understand that they are a personal brand.  They should prepare and practice a 30 second commercial about who they are, what have they done in the past both academically and professionally, and what strengths they can contribute to an employer.  I caution job seekers to be sure not to make it about what they are looking for in an employer or job, but what attributes they can bring to an employer or job.

 Resumes/Cover Letter.

Recent graduates should have an updated resume that is error free and easy to read.  A strong resume will highlight skills and training acquired over the course of your education.  Your resume should change each time you apply for a different job. You want to showcase your most relevant skills and experiences as it relates to the job you are applying for.  Your cover letter should expound on some of the accomplishments you acquired as they relate to your skills that qualifies you for the position.  Also, have a list of professional and academic references readily available.  Contact this group and ask permission to use them as references.

Commit to a daily job search regiment.

Develop a tracking system. Keep a detailed list of your job search activities including who you have emailed, what events or networking meetings you have attended, a list of business cards you received and where you met those new contacts, job interviews (rather formal or informal), follow-up letter and phone calls.  You will be so consumed with applying for jobs, it’s a good idea to keep records.

 Networking.

Join a professional organization or local association in your industry; this also includes joining alumni associations.  Attend the association meetings, volunteer to lead committees or participate in mixers and events.

A recent grad should have a professional image online. This can be achieved through creating a LinkedIn profile. Several groups exist on LinkedIn where recent grads can interact directly with recruiters in specific industries and connect with other members to build a network.

Furthermore, LinkedIn profiles can be used to showcase relevant skills sets and experiences.  Profiles can be built to include employment (current and past), education, industry and recommendations.

Though social media is a huge part of the job search strategy, if recent graduates have a less than favorable presence via Twitter or Facebook, they should be sure to set your privacy settings to private.

Volunteer or seek internships during your job search journey.

Keep your skills current by volunteering or obtaining an internship.  All work experience doesn’t have to be paid work experience.  Non-profits are a great place to start if you are having trouble identifying a company to volunteer your time.

Career Centers. Use your college’s career center. These are professionals who have years of experience with career development and planning.  They are ready and willing to assist alumni with your job search journey.

The power of networking is strong.  To be competitive, you have to have a value added proposition. What’s yours?  To be able to identify or quantify your value, evaluate what strengths you possess.  Also, be able to position yourself as an expert in your field or area by continuing to grow as a professional through trainings, seminars or workshops.

San Jacinto College student Marquitia Wright recently won third place on the state level for a poem she submitted in the National Career Development Association Poster and Poetry Contest. Wright, a criminal justice student at the North Campus, entitled her poem “My Career Dream.” In the poem, she envisions how she will serve in the criminal justice career field as one who “will continue to dream of justice and of peace; that dream of mine to get criminals off the street.” She won a certificate and a gift for her submission. The DNA of a Resume

The DNA of a Resume

It is becoming more prevalent for employers to request resumes as a method for job seekers to apply for open positions.  You may ask yourself, what does the employer really want to know about me and how can a resume reveal that information.  The employer on average reviews resumes for only 5-7 seconds.  Therefore, the employer is looking for certain information that catches their eye; thus the way your resume is structured is very important.

 HEADING

The heading should include your:  Name, address, phone, and e-mail as a way of contacting you.  The heading is then followed by a profile summary which has replaced the objective.

CAREER PROFILE

The objective was a bias section of the resume.  It spoke more to what you as the applicant where looking for from the employer and not so much of what you can do for the employer. In place of an objective, the profile summary allows you to list your skills, values and interests to gain the attention of the reader is an excellent place to include keywords and requirements that have been stated in a job description.

 EDUCATION

Present your education in reverse chronological order. This section should come first, after identifying who you are and where you live. If you have a college degree, your high school information is unnecessary on your resume. It can be included if you wish to mention honors such as “Who’s Who” or similar honors.

 EXPERIENCE

List your work experience starting with the current or most recent job. Include name of company, dates, job title (or titles) and the city and state. Do not give your supervisor’s name and number on the resume. Include a list of the most important job duties performed for each position. Short bulleted statements are preferable to paragraph format because they are easier to read.

 *AWARDS

Include any honors or awards received. Be sure to put organization that awarded you with the honor.

 *VOLUNTEER/ACTIVITIES

Any volunteer experience or activities that you are involved in can be included in this section.

*These sections are necessary for individuals who do not have prior or limited work experience

Resumes Review

Need help writing a resume? We can help.  The entire month of March, the Career Centers will be reviewing resumes!!!
